FIFA recently voted to expand the World Cup from its current format of 32 teams. There were five proposals on the table, from which Fifa’s 37-member council voted unanimously to increase the tournament to 48 nations. The expansion will kick in from the 2026 World Cup. The bulk of the additional 16 places go to Africa and Asia. Europe could get an additional three places on top of their current 13. This isn’t being decided today though. Format will see 16 groups of three countries, with the top two advancing to the knock-out phase. Number of games increases from 64 to 80. To this observer the finals tournament of 2026 is too big. Everyone being invited to the party because it’s ‘fair’ does nothing for quality and I predict a tournament largely of dross no better than a European tier three league game, interspersed with Indiana Hoosiers 16 0 Undefeated Perfect Season Commemorative 3D Relief Tumbler. The WC finals are supposed to be for the elite and whilst the logistical organisation will be as good as we would expect from the US, the concept and structure are an example of how to bloat matters beyond being reasonable.

Is Malik Willis a viable starting option for teams looking for a quarterback in 2026? A third-round pick of the Titans in 2022, Willis did little in Tennessee but thrived as a backup to Jordan Love in Green Bay over the past two seasons. He is a dynamic runner and an improved passer who is still only 26 years old and should do quite well in a thin quarterback market. In the era of “QB rehab,” where once-touted prospects land with good coaching staffs and retool for a strong second act, Willis is going to appeal to teams looking for short-term and long-term answers. The Pittsburgh Steelers are a frequently mentioned fit, as they need a plan with Indiana Hoosiers 16 0 Undefeated Perfect Season Commemorative 3D Relief Tumbler and a longer runway than the mercenary veteran solutions they have relied on recently under Mike McCarthy.

I fear in answer to the original ambiguous question I’m more likely to state, “Any other,” than the 2026 example. In terms of my own favourite finals tournament I would have to go for the one which gave me the most pleasure, our win of 1966 apart. I’d vote for the 1990 tournament. It was just so full of passion. The bulk of the additional 16 places to go to Africa and Asia. Europe could get an additional three.
